We held a grand opening ceremony on June 8, 2011, to celebrate the successful construction of the Sunset Playground at T.R. Woods Memorial Park, and to provide thanks and recognition to the many sponsors and volunteers who built the playground this spring.  Thank you to all of the organizers, volunteers, and sponsors, all of whom are listed on this web site under the Sponsors tab.

Donations Update: Although we have raised $61,705 to date, we still need to raise approximately $10,000 more in cash donations in order to complete the shade pavilion, which can hopefully be built in the Spring of 2012.  Of the $61,705 raised so far, $23,500 has come from organizations outside the neighborhood and $25,000 from the City of Redding.  For those of us living in the neighborhood, who are directly benefiting from this major improvement, we all need to contribute. So far, the neighbors of Sunset Terrace, Sunset West, and Overhill Drive have generously contributed $12,300. Let's keep the donations coming!  Please click on the Donations tab to make a donation today!

Build Day
Build Day on May 21, 2011 was a huge success!  Following months of construction work on site, which involved grading and excavation work, underground  utility work, walkway construction, and concrete work, approximately 200 volunteers arrived at 8 am to build the playground.   To give us energy for the work ahead, we first had a nice breakfast, which was donated by Topps Sunset Market.   In the morning, we assembled the many components, bolted them together in the play area, carefully plumbed and leveled the structures, and poured many footings.  At noon, we had a delicious barbecue lunch prepared by John Reit, with meat provided by R&R Meats.  After lunch, we completed the installation of the play stucture, poured the last footings, and moved many tons of wood chips, which was a monumental task that many hands completed in record time.  By 3:30, we were finished!   The turnout from the community has been tremendous, and the result of our hard work is a beautiful new playground that will be enjoyed by kids and families for a long time.

Design Day
Design Day on March 15 provided a fun time for kids in West Redding neighborhoods to let the Active 20-30 Club of Redding and the Rotary Club of Redding West know what they would like in their dream playground.   Thank you to all of the parents and children who braved the cold, wet weather to meet at the Manzanita School Cafeteria to be creative with your excellent design ideas!  Also, thank you to Fred Hurst and Angelo's for the pizza!  For more news on the Design Day playground design charette, please check out the Record Searchlight's online article, which was featured on the front page of the print copy of the Local section on March 16.

About the Sunset Playground Project:
Under the guidance of the Rotary Club of Redding West, the City of Redding, and the Active 20-30 Club of Redding, we constructed a playground at the T.R. Woods Memorial Park in the Spring of 2011.

The playground provides a nicely designed setting for neighbors, families, children, and grandchildren to play and spend time together outside.
The next phase, which is to be built in the Spring 2012, will include a new shade pavilion, three picnic tables, and a barbecue.  We will also be installing a video surveillance system in the park.  This will make our neighborhood safer and also add to our existing Neighborhood Watch program.
This year, several people in our neighborhood formed a committee to work with Rotary, the City of Redding, and our partner organizations to help complete the design of the playground.  Together, we have organized a neighborhood fundraising campaign for  the Sunset Playground at T.R. Woods Memorial Park.  Phase One includes the following amenities:
•  Play Structure
•  Swing Set
•  Benches
•  Concrete Border
•  Concrete Walkway
•  Play Area Surfacing

Phase Two, to be built in the Spring of 2012, includes a shade pavilion, three picnic tables, a barbecue, and a video surveillance system.

The labor for the construction of the playground and installation of the play equipment is being donated by members of the Active 20-30 Club of Redding, Rotary Club of Redding West, Rotary Club of Redding East, Redding Sunrise Rotary Club, Catalyst of Redding, and many volunteers in our neighborhood.  The surveying, architectural, and engineering services are being donated by members of the Rotary Club of Redding West.
This project, which is reliant on neighborhood fundraising, provides us a way to invest in our community and also improve the value of the homes we own.
To make this playground a reality, we need our neighbors’ help.  You have the opportunity to sponsor the construction of the playground.  In doing so you will receive permanent recognition in the form of a plaque affixed to your sponsored item.
Tax-deductible contributions to the Sunset Playground at T.R. Woods Memorial Park can be made by either check or credit card, with checks payable to the Shasta Regional Community Foundation, which is a certified 501(c)(3) organization.  Credit card payments can be made through Shasta Regional Community Foundation's website, and checks can be mailed to:
